NYC High School Admissions

Competitive City, Competitive Process

Admissions Overview

New York has a vast and complex secondary and high school admissions process. Every year, tens of thousands of eighth graders compete for entry to New York's premier public, private and religious high schools and secondary schools.  Admissions criteria vary, and may include standardized examinations, interviews and auditions, essays, portfolios and students’ middle school academic records. Ascendant's advisers help students and their parents navigate the system, and assist them with choosing the best school for each student's needs, and the best path to get there.

The most competitive group of public schools in New York are the specialized high schools, including Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech.  Entry to these schools is based solely upon a student's performance on the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT). Our advisers can evaluate your child's strengths and interests in order to determine which of the schools is the right fit for him or her.
